How to measure YouTube ads: views, cost per view and real enquiries

A plain English guide to the numbers in YouTube ads reports and which ones actually tell you whether the campaign is working.

Short answer

Views tell you people saw the ad. Enquiries tell you the ad paid for itself. Look at both, but judge the campaign by cost per enquiry and keep views as a supporting signal.

The numbers you will see

  • Impressions: how many times the ad was shown.
  • Views: for many video formats, a view is counted when someone watches for a set time (30 seconds, or the whole ad if it is shorter) or interacts with it. Watching less than that is an impression, not a view.
  • View rate: views divided by impressions. A higher rate usually means the opening of the ad is working.
  • Cost per view (CPV): what you paid on average for each view.
  • Click-through rate and clicks: how many people clicked to your site or page.
  • Conversions: the actions you care about, such as form fills, calls or WhatsApp clicks.
  • View-through conversions: actions taken by people who saw the ad, did not click, and came back to act soon after.

Numbers that look good but can mislead

A very low cost per view can come from people who watch a few seconds and never act. A large number of views from the wrong audience will not bring customers. That is why we always pair view data with enquiry data.

Set up tracking first

Before spending, make sure these are working:

  1. Your Google Ads account is linked to your YouTube channel.
  2. Website actions such as form submissions and click-to-call are tracked as conversions.
  3. Phone calls and WhatsApp clicks from the ad or page are counted.
  4. Your landing page loads fast on a phone.

A simple monthly review

  1. Check spend, views and view rate for each ad.
  2. Check how many enquiries each audience and each ad brought.
  3. Calculate cost per enquiry for each.
  4. Pause the weakest, move budget to the strongest, and test one new opening.
  5. Ask the sales team how good the enquiries were, since quality matters as much as quantity.

Reading the report like an owner

Open the report and ask four questions. Did the right people see it, meaning the right city, areas and language? Did they watch enough of the ad to hear the offer? Did they take the action we asked for? And did the enquiries turn into real conversations? If the answer breaks at one step, that step is the one to fix. For example, good views with few clicks usually points to a weak call to action, while many clicks and few enquiries points to the landing page.

Use more than one signal

Combine the ad platform report with your own records. Count the calls, WhatsApp messages and forms that arrived in the same weeks, and ask each new customer how they found you. Google Analytics and your phone log help confirm what the ad report says. When the numbers agree, you can trust them.

When to be patient

YouTube often works on people who are not ready to buy today. Some of them search for your name later or come back through another channel. That is why a few weeks of data, plus a look at branded searches, gives a fairer picture than a few days.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good view rate for YouTube ads?

There is no single number that fits every business. View rate depends on the audience, the creative and the format. Compare your own ads against each other over time, and use enquiries as the final judge.

Why do I see views but no enquiries?

Common reasons are a weak call to action, a landing page that does not match the ad, the wrong audience, or tracking that is not set up. Fix tracking first so you know what is really happening.

How long before I can judge a campaign?

Give it a few weeks with steady spend. Judging after two or three days usually means judging noise.
