To choose an SEO company, look for one that explains its plan in plain language, shows how it will measure results against your business goals, refuses to guarantee rankings, and gives you access to your own accounts and reports. If a company cannot do those four things, keep looking.
SEO is difficult to evaluate in advance because results take months. That is why the quality of the conversation before you sign is the best signal you have.
Start by knowing what you want SEO to do
Before you speak to any agency, write down the outcome. Not 'rank on page one' but something closer to the business: more patient enquiries for a clinic, more demo requests for a B2B software firm, more showroom visits for a furniture store, more direct orders for a D2C brand.
This matters because it changes the type of SEO you need. A local clinic in Hyderabad mostly needs local SEO and a strong Google Business Profile. An online store needs product and category page work. A manufacturer selling to buyers in other countries needs content that matches how overseas buyers search. An agency that proposes the same package to all three has not listened.
What should a good SEO company ask you?
Pay attention to the questions they ask in the first meeting. A good team will want to know:
- What does a new customer or lead actually look like, and what is it worth to you?
- Which products or services do you most want to sell?
- Who are your real competitors, online and offline?
- What is the state of your website and who controls it?
- What has been tried before, and what happened?
If they jump straight to a price and a list of deliverables, that is a template, not a strategy.
Red flags to walk away from
- Guaranteed rankings or guaranteed first-page results. Nobody controls Google. Anyone who promises a position is either misleading you or planning something risky.
- Secret methods. Good agencies can explain what they do. Vague talk of 'proprietary systems' with no detail is a warning.
- Bulk link packages. Buying hundreds of links cheaply can lead to penalties. Read our notes on link building to see what safe looks like.
- No access to your data. You should own your Google Search Console, Analytics and Business Profile. If they want to run everything from their accounts, you are being locked in.
- Reports that only show rankings and traffic. Those are inputs, not business results.
- Unsolicited cold emails saying your site has 'critical errors'.
What good SEO work includes
The exact mix depends on your situation, but a sensible proposal usually covers these areas, with reasons for each:
- A review of your current site to find technical issues that stop pages being found or indexed.
- Research on what your customers actually search for, grouped by intent.
- A plan for which pages exist, which need improving and which should be created.
- On-page work such as titles, headings, content and internal links.
- Content that is useful, accurate and written for people, not stuffed with keywords.
- Local SEO where location matters.
- Earning links and mentions from credible sources, slowly and legitimately.
Compare a proposal against this list to judge whether it looks thorough or thin.
How should an SEO company report results?
Ask to see a sample report. Good reports tie activity to outcomes: calls, form submissions, WhatsApp clicks, enquiries and sales where it can be tracked. They also explain what was done, what changed, and what happens next, in sentences you can follow.
Ask how they handle tracking. If calls and form fills are not being measured, nobody can tell whether SEO is working. Reporting should be monthly and include a short conversation, not just a PDF.
How long should SEO take, and what does it cost?
Be wary of anyone who gives you an exact timeline. A realistic answer is that early improvements, such as fixes and better visibility for easier searches, can show within a few months, while competitive searches take longer. A site's age, competition, content quality and history all affect speed.
On cost, price varies widely with scope. Very cheap packages usually mean templated work, and very expensive ones do not guarantee better results. Ask exactly what time and skills you are paying for each month. Our pricing page shows how we structure engagements.
How involved will you need to be?
SEO is not something you can hand over and forget. Even the best agency needs access to your website, quick answers about your services, approval on content and honest feedback on the leads that come in. A real estate developer, for instance, must tell the agency which enquiries were genuine buyers, otherwise the work cannot be steered toward quality.
Ask what the agency needs from you each month and how they handle delays. Projects often stall because approvals take weeks, not because the strategy was wrong.
Should you check past work?
Yes, but read it carefully. Case studies with no context are easy to produce. Ask what the starting position was, what was changed, how long it took and what else was happening at the time, such as a seasonal rise or an ad campaign. Ask whether you can see live examples of sites they have worked on, and judge whether the writing and structure are the kind you would want on your own site.
Questions to ask before you sign
- Who will actually work on my account, and how experienced are they?
- What would you do in the first 90 days, and why?
- How will you measure success for my business specifically?
- Will I own all accounts, content and work done?
- What happens if I leave? Can I take everything with me?
- What do you need from me, and how quickly?
- Can you speak to a client with a similar business, with their permission?
- When SEO is not the right channel for me, will you tell me?
That last question is a good test of honesty. Sometimes paid search is the faster route while SEO builds in the background, and a good agency will say so.
Local agency or national agency?
Location matters less for the technical work, but a local team that understands your market helps with local search, language and customer behaviour. A Hyderabad business selling to Hyderabad customers benefits from someone who knows the neighbourhoods, directories and how people there actually search. Businesses selling across India or abroad can work with any agency that has relevant experience.
One last check: ask how the agency handles bad news. Rankings fluctuate, algorithm updates happen and some months disappoint. A trustworthy partner tells you early, explains the cause and proposes a response, instead of hiding behind busy reports.
How Insprio Media can help
We have worked in digital marketing since 2015, and we run SEO alongside websites, Google Business Profile and paid advertising, so recommendations are not tied to one channel. We tell clients what we would do, how we will measure it and what we cannot promise. If you want a second opinion on a proposal you have received, our SEO team is happy to review it, or you can contact us directly.
